“Red River Fly Fishers Release”-January 29, 2008

Christmas Party: Believe it or not some RRFF elves are already working on our 2008 Christmas Party! Our 2008 annual Christmas Party will be held on Tuesday, December 3. Plan early and save the date! If you are interested in helping plan our 2008 Christmas Party please contact Mary K Janco at 972-542-8692.

Rod Raffle: Last fall Temple Fork Outfitters (TFO), Dallas, TX donated a fly rod to our club to be raffled off. The raffle drawing was held on Saturday, January 26 at the Texoma Tie-In. We raised $475.00! The luck winner is Mike Cogburn. Thanks go to all those who bought a raffle ticket in support of our club. Proceeds from the raffle go to the RRFF treasury. Thank you also to TFO and Rick Pope, President of TFO, for your generous donation in support of our club.

“Texoma Tie-In” The Second Annual Lake Texoma Tie-In (TTI) was held on Saturday, January 26 at Eisenhower State Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A committee headed by Steve Hollensed worked hard to make this a successful event. Thanks go to the tiers and RRFF volunteers who gave of their time and talents to make this a great event.  Thanks also to Orvis, Dallas and Temple Fork Outfitters for their participation and support of the event. Steve will talk more about the event at our February meeting. We had two local television stations cover TTI. Any volunteers for the Third Annual Texoma Tie-In?

January 2008 Meeting: Thanks to Roger Turner of Trout Unlimited for being our first speaker of the new year. Roger has been fishing for over 35 years and is the North Texas Representative for Guadalupe River Trout Unlimited. His excellent presentation was titled “Fly Fishing for Trout in the Guadalupe Tailwater.” Some RRFF members went fishing on the Guadalupe shortly after his talk and the information he presented was a great help.

February 2008 Meeting: The scheduled speaker for our February 5, 2008 meeting is Al Crise, FFF Certified Master Casting Instructor. Al’s topic will be: “Stroke and Arc-The Mechanics of Fly Casting.” Al is very knowledgeable, a skilled teacher, great speaker and always entertaining. He has also forgotten more about fly fishing than most of us will ever know.

March 2008 Meeting: The scheduled speaker for our March 4, 2008 meeting is Sean Polk, Fishing Manager the Orvis store in Dallas, TX. His topic will be Fly Fishing on the Brazos and Paluxy.

Fly Tying: Jeff Tomlinson has graciously agreed to host the second Tuesday of the month Fly Tying Lessons at 7 p.m. at Gander Mountain. If you do not know Jeff, or have not attended one of his classes, he is a great tyer and instructor. Jeff is always coming up with something unique and interesting. Thank you Jeff, for agreeing to do this again in 2008. The next fly tying meeting will be on Tuesday, February 12, 2008. Jeff has recovered from his surgery and is back at work full-time.

Fly Casting Clinic: Save the date of Saturday, March 22, 2008! That is when Steve Hollensed, CCI will present a free Casting Coaching Clinic to members of Red River Fly Fishers.

  • Place: Baker Lake (aka Pickens Lake), Sherman, TX.
  • Instructors: Steve Hollensed, CCI, Sean Polk, Orvis and assistants.
  • Time: 8:30 a.m. to whenever.
  • Fishing: On your own with other RRFF members at Baker Lake.
  • Sign up: You must sign up for a time slot in advance.

At this clinic you will receive individual instruction on: fly casting for beginners, improving your current casting skills, casting fault analysis and correction, etc. More details will be provided by Steve at our February and March 2008 meetings.

Texas Women Fly Fishers (TWFF): We have been asked by the TWFF to co-host an outing at Lake Texoma on December 5, 6 and 7, 2008. We already have several volunteers from RRFF who have expressed an interest in working with the TWFF to put this event together. This is a great opportunity to host an event in our backyard and share our knowledge of local fishing with another club. We need a few more volunteers. If you are interested in helping out please contact Mary K Janco or Steve Hollensed.

Dues for 2008: Remember to renew your membership dues for 2008. If you are a current RRFF member you should have already received an invoice for your dues in 2008. If you are not a member and would like to join you can find an application on our web site: rrff.org.

The Fly Tying Session was held at Gander Mountain and the theme of the night was Dry Flies. Jeff demonstrated his Elk Hair Caddis and Buddy was showing a fly he is just learning using burned wings in a style popularized by Ken Iwamasa and Tatsuhiro Saido. Ken taught a visitor to tie his first fly, a very fishable Wooly Bugger. So come out next month and learn some new flies and techniques!

4 September 2007

The September meeting was well attended with Dick and Janet Freeman providing an outstanding show on their travels to Colorado this summer to fish the ‘Dream Stream’, Gunnison and other other area streams for Trout.

We just have one question – what exactly was that video that kept popping up on Media Player?

Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine has an article in the September 2007 issue that features one of our very own members - Steve Hollensed. The title of the article - Big Jerks !

........Now that you've had your laugh at Steve's expense, go buy a copy or get it at the Library and read it! It's a very good article on fishing for Stripers in Texoma and many of the other lakes in Texas. And when I said it features Steve, take a look at this excerpt from the very first paragraph of the article...

"Steve Hollensed powers the 9-fot, 8-weight fly rod forward, and the black head of the shooting taper line rockets through the guids, gobbling up the yellow loops of lighter line coiled at his feet"

Check out the article for more information.
